Cells in the Early Embryo Battle Each Other to Death for Becoming Part of the Organism

Spanish researchers at the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) have found that during the early stages of mammalian development, embryonic cells embark on a battle for survival. Through this battle, the less active of these cells are eliminated by their stronger sisters.

The work is published today in the journal Nature.
This phenomenon, termed cell competition, occurs in a defined time window, between days 3 and 7 of mouse development. During this period all embryonic cells compete with each other, as explained by Dr. Cristina Claveria, first author of the study, and Dr. Miguel Torres, director of this work and Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Development and Repair at CNIC.
"Thanks to cell competition the developing organism optimizes itself by selecting the cells theoretically more capable of supporting vital functions throughout the life of the new individual," says Dr. Claveria. According to the authors, this would be particularly important in long-lived organisms, like humans, where the functionality of their tissues must be maintained throughout a long life.
Dr. Miguel Torres also explains that when cell competition is prevented, cells that normally would have lost the battle now become able to contribute to the new organism: "We think, however, that this organism will probably be less capable than the one which would have been formed under normal circumstances. In what sense will it be less adequate is a matter of great interest that we will address in the coming years."
Indeed, the researchers are able to determine in advance which cells will win this battle: those with higher levels of the Myc protein, an important controller of cell metabolic capacity. Moreover, using a new technique that they have developed for the production of genetic mosaics, they are able to manipulate the levels of Myc protein in cells, thus changing the outcome of the fight.
According to Claveria and Torres, the study shows that the early embryo is a mosaic of cells with very different levels of Myc ,in which cells with higher levels of Myc eliminate those with lower levels. However, it is important to understand that those who die are viable cells. "Their removal occurs only because the embryo has more suitable cells able to replace them, and therefore this is an optimization mechanism, not a repair one," the researchers point out.
A fascinating aspect of the work is the illustration that this battle does not waste cellular resources; dying loser cells are engulfed and digested by their winning neighbours, who then recycle and use all the nutrients for the benefit of the embryo. This research provides answers to some of the questions raised nearly forty years ago by Spanish scientists Ginés Morata and Pedro Ripoll, who in 1975 discovered cell competition in the fruit fly. On that occasion, by experimental manipulation, they described the phenomenon in the fly's wing. Since then cell competition has been suggested to be involved in multiple processes, including tumour progression and tissue regeneration; but never, until this study, had a natural function been described.

A New Way to Trap Light: Phenomenon Could Lead to New Types of Lasers and Sensors

There are several ways to "trap" a beam of light -- usually with mirrors, other reflective surfaces, or high-tech materials such as photonic crystals. But now researchers at MIT have discovered a new method to trap light that could find a wide variety of applications.

The new system, devised through computer modeling and then demonstrated experimentally, pits light waves against light waves: It sets up two waves that have the same wavelength, but exactly opposite phases -- where one wave has a peak, the other has a trough -- so that the waves cancel each other out. Meanwhile, light of other wavelengths (or colors) can pass through freely.
The researchers say that this phenomenon could apply to any type of wave: sound waves, radio waves, electrons (whose behavior can be described by wave equations), and even waves in water.
The discovery is reported this week in the journal Nature by professors of physics Marin Soljačić and John Joannopoulos, associate professor of applied mathematics Steven Johnson, and graduate students Chia Wei Hsu, Bo Zhen, Jeongwon Lee and Song-Liang Chua.
"For many optical devices you want to build," Soljačić says -- including lasers, solar cells and fiber optics -- "you need a way to confine light." This has most often been accomplished using mirrors of various kinds, including both traditional mirrors and more advanced dielectric mirrors, as well as exotic photonic crystals and devices that rely on a phenomenon called Anderson localization. In all of these cases, light's passage is blocked: In physics terminology, there are no "permitted" states for the light to continue on its path, so it is forced into a reflection.
In the new system, however, that is not the case. Instead, light of a particular wavelength is blocked by destructive interference from other waves that are precisely out of phase. "It's a very different way of confining light," Soljačić says.
While there may ultimately be practical applications, at this point the team is focused on its discovery of a new, unexpected phenomenon. "New physical phenomena often enable new applications," Hsu says. Possible applications, he suggests, could include large-area lasers and chemical or biological sensors.
The researchers first saw the possibility of this phenomenon through numerical simulations; the prediction was then verified experimentally.
In mathematical terms, the new phenomenon -- where one frequency of light is trapped while other nearby frequencies are not -- is an example of an "embedded eigenvalue." This had been described as a theoretical possibility by the mathematician and computational pioneer John von Neumann in 1929. While physicists have since been interested in the possibility of such an effect, nobody had previously seen this phenomenon in practice, except for special cases involving symmetry.
This work is "very significant, because it represents a new kind of mirror which, in principle, has perfect reflectivity," says A. Douglas Stone, a professor of physics at Yale University who was not involved in this research. The finding, he says, "is surprising because it was believed that photonic crystal surfaces still obeyed the usual laws of refraction and reflection," but in this case they do not.
Stone adds, "This is in fact a realization of the famous 'bound state in the continuum' proposed by von Neumann and [theoretical physicist and mathematician Eugene] Wigner at the dawn of quantum theory, but in a practical, realizable form. The potential applications the authors mention, to high-power single-mode lasers and to large-area chemical [and] biological sensing, are very intriguing and exciting if they pan out."

Hubble Finds a True Blue Planet: Giant Jupiter-Sized Planet Located 63 Light-Years Away


Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have deduced the actual visible-light color of a planet orbiting another star 63 light-years away.
If seen directly it would look like a "deep blue dot," reminiscent of Earth's color as seen from space. But that's where all comparison ends. The planet's daytime atmosphere is nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and it possibly rains glass -- sideways -- in howling 4,500-mile-per-hour winds.
The cobalt blue color doesn't come from the reflection of a tropical ocean, but rather from a hazy blow-torched atmosphere and perhaps from high clouds laced with silicate particles. The condensation temperature of silicates could form very small drops of glass that would scatter blue light more than red light.
The turbulent alien world, cataloged HD 189733b, is one of the nearest exoplanets to Earth that can be seen crossing the face of its star. It has been intensively studied by Hubble and other observatories, and its atmosphere is dramatically changeable and exotic.
The observations yield new insights into the chemical composition and cloud structure of a bizarre "hot Jupiter" class planet, which orbits precariously close to its parent star.
Clouds often play key roles in planetary atmospheres, and detecting the presence and importance of clouds in hot Jupiters is crucial, say researchers. "We obviously don't know much on the physics and climatology of silicate clouds, so we are exploring a new domain of atmospheric physics," said team member Frederic Pont of the University of Exeter, South West England, the United Kingdom.
The team used Hubble's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph to measure changes in the color of light from the planet before, during, and after the passage of the planet behind the parent star. This technique is possible because the planet's orbit is tilted edge-on as viewed from Earth; therefore, it routinely passes in front of and then behind the star.
Hubble measured a small drop in light -- about one part in 10,000 -- when the planet went behind the star, and a slight change in the color of the light, too. "We saw the light becoming less bright in the blue, but not in the green or the red. This means that the object that disappeared is blue because light was missing in the blue, but not in the red when it was hidden," said Pont.
The team's study will be published online July 11 and will appear in the August 1 issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Earlier observations have reported evidence for the scattering of blue light on the planet. But this most recent Hubble observation gives confirming evidence, said the researchers.
The planet HD 189733b was discovered in 2005. At a distance of only 2.9 million miles from its parent star, the planet is so close that it is gravitationally "tidally locked" so that one side always faces the star and the other side is always dark.
In 2007 NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope measured the infrared light, or heat, from the planet. This observation produced one of the first-ever temperature maps of an exoplanet. The map shows that the dayside and night-side temperatures differ by about 500 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature difference should cause fierce winds to roar from the daytime to nighttime side. The complementary visible-light Hubble observations reduce contamination from the planet's own hot glow, and focus on atmospheric composition.
Pont cautions that it's difficult to know exactly what causes the color of a planet's atmosphere, even for solar system planets. For example, Jupiter is reddish due to unknown color-carrying molecules. Venus does not reflect ultraviolet (UV) light due to an unknown UV absorber in the atmosphere.
Earth looks blue from space because the oceans absorb red and green wavelengths more strongly than blue light. In addition, the oceans reflect Earth's blue sky where the shorter blue wavelengths of sunlight are selectively scattered by atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen molecules in a process called Rayleigh scattering.

Huawei Keen to Launch Ascend P6 Google Edition

Huawei has confirmed they are now in talks with Google to explore the possibility of coming up with a Google Edition of its latest Ascend P6 smartphone. The Chinese company has only recently launched the Ascend P6 which has come to be recognized as the slimmest smartphone on the planet. Also, the latest development marks a complete U turn as Huawei had earlier ruled out going for a Google Edition of the P6 which they had claimed to be much better off with the Emotion UI that it has provided the P6 with. The company chairman Richard Yu had stated during the smartphone’s launch event in London they have made a lot of changes to the user interface which made them loathe dumping it altogether in favor of a Google Edition of the device offering a vanilla Android experience.
However, it’s the publicity that the Google Edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One that might have forced Huawei to rethink their decision. The President of Handset Product Division at Huawei, Kevin Ho has confirmed they are weighing the possibility of launching a Google Edition Ascend P6 though all of it is still in the nebulous stages and neither Google nor Huawei have confirmed such a device is indeed coming our way.
The Ascend P6 which was launched at an event in London last week comes with a 1.5 GHz quad core processor, 2 GB of RAM along with 8 GB of internal storage. Plus, there also is a micro SD card slot to allow for further memory expansion of up to 32 GB. The device features a 4.7 inch full HD display and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box. The P6 also comes with a better than expected 5 mp camera at the front though a bit disappointing 8 mp unit at the rear. A 2,000 mAh battery will be providing the juice.

Google Is Developing Android Game Console

Google Inc. is developing a video-game console and wristwatch powered by its Android operating system, according to people familiar with the matter, as the Internet company seeks to spread the software beyond smartphones and tablets.
With the game machine and digital watch, Google is hoping to combat similar devices that Apple Inc. may release in the future, according to the people.
Google is also preparing to release a second version of an Android-powered media-streaming device, called Nexus Q, that was unveiled last year but not sold to the public, these people said.
The Internet giant hopes to design and market the devices itself and release at least one of them this fall, they added.
A Google spokeswoman declined to comment.
The hardware plans are the latest sign of Google’s determination to build on the success of Android, the software it launched in 2008 that powered 75% of all smartphones and 57% of tablets shipped globally in the first quarter, according to the research firm IDC.
Games that run on Android software have proved particularly popular, and they are growing more quickly than games made for the big-name consoles supplied by Microsoft Corp., Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co. The appeal of such games has prompted the development of new devices aimed specifically for Android by other hardware companies.
Sony and Microsoft have recently unveiled new versions of their PlayStation and Xbox game consoles, which are expected to go on sale later this year. Together with Nintendo, sales of the games for these devices accounted for most of the $24.9 billion spent world-wide last year on console games, according to market researcher PwC.
The people briefed on the matter said Google is reacting in part to expectations that rival Apple will launch a videogame console as part of its next Apple TV product release.
An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.
Google has also been watching the efforts of Ouya Inc., a startup that this week began selling a $99 Android-based console and game controller, one of these people said.
The company’s hardware efforts come as it wraps up development on the next version of Android, which is expected to be released in the fall. Among other things, the software will be better tailored to the lower-cost smartphones prevalent in developing countries with the aim of firming up Android’s market-share globally, said some of the people familiar with the matter.
Google, through its Android unit and Google X hardware lab, is seeking to build devices separately from the company’s Motorola hardware division. The handset maker was acquired last year and is currently focused on launching an Android-based smartphone called the Moto X, these people said.
Meanwhile, Google has been developing low-cost Android smartphones of its own with an eye toward offering them in developing markets, other people familiar with the matter have said, including in markets where Google plans to fund or help create next-generation wireless networks.
With the next release of Android this fall, Google is also moving more aggressively to use the software in additional kinds of devices, including laptops and appliances such as refrigerators.
Personal-computer makers including Hewlett Packard Co. are already working on Android-powered laptops running the next version of the software, an effort that is separate from already launched Android tablets that can physically connect to a keyboard, according to people familiar with the matter. Android laptops would thus compete with those powered by Microsoft’s Windows software. An H-P spokeswoman declined to comment.
Android is offered free to makers of devices like smartphones and tablets, with Samsung Electronics Co. the biggest of Google’s hardware partners. The hardware helps Google generate revenue from services like Google Search and YouTube.
Last fall Google said it was on track to generate $8 billion annually in gross revenue from mobile devices, though some analysts say the majority of Google’s net mobile revenue comes from Web search and YouTube used on Apple devices.
As part of the release of the next Android version—known internally as “K release” and referred to by industry observers as “Key Lime Pie”—Google will give manufacturers such as Samsung greater freedom to use Android in devices other than smartphones and tablets, such as appliances and wearable devices, said people familiar with the matter.
Manufacturers that build devices using the official version of Android—which comes with Google’s Web services preinstalled—weren’t previously allowed by Google to use the Android name to promote devices other than smartphones and tablets. Over time, Google has changed its “compatibility” restrictions to allow for more device types.
Samsung has said it’s working on an Android-based watch with smartphone-like capabilities. Wearable computing is a hot area of development for startups and technology giants. The Wall Street Journalreported in February that Apple was developing a watch-like device with smartphone features.
Google’s planned watch is expected to connect to a person’s smartphone via Bluetooth technology, said people familiar with the matter. The Business Insider blog said in January that Google was “actively exploring the idea” of making such a watch.
Some industry observers say Google, Samsung and other technology companies are motivated in part by a desire not to let Apple build a big lead in a newer product category, as it did after launching the iPhone and iPad.
For its part, Google is also trying to popularize a new category of wearable devices. Its most serious effort is Google Glass, a device worn on the face with a computer screen above one eye. It delivers information from the person’s smartphone, which is connected to Glass via Bluetooth technology. The device, made by the Google X unit, is expected to go on sale to the public next year.
Google has hit some bumps on the road to becoming a legitimate hardware manufacturer and consumer-electronics brand like Apple.
The first version of its spherically shaped Nexus Q home-entertainment device—the first-ever consumer device designed and marketed by Google—was unveiled last year, but its sale to the public was canceled amid criticism that its $299 price tag was too high. The next version of the Android-based device, which is supposed to help Google sell more music and movies through Google Play, will be much less expensive, said the people familiar with the matter.
According to Google, the majority of Android devices currently being used rely on a version of the software released in 2011 that has fewer capabilities than newer releases. Some industry experts say that the most recent versions of Android are better for higher-end devices than lower-end or older ones that had, for instance, 512 megabytes of memory.
The coming version of Android is supposed to remedy the issue, said people familiar with the matter, and also help mobile app developers focus on optimizing their apps for fewer versions of the software.
Google’s head of Android, Sundar Pichai, in May said more than 900 million devices powered by Android had been activated worldwide, up from 400 million a year ago and 100 million two years ago.
Jen-Hsun Huang, the chief executive of Nvidia Corp., which makes microchips for devices powered by Android, said in a recent interview that over time there would be three billion people who use Android devices, and that one million programmers globally are already using the software to build applications or devices. He said Android is poised to disrupt the videogame and consumer-electronics industry; computer systems in cars; as well as personal computing, such as desktop computers. He declined to discuss any unreleased products.

Google News Adds New Features in Wake of Google Reader's Death

Google is killing Reader tomorrow, and as a sort of consolation prize, they’ve added some new features to Google News. There’s now a box that features a four-day forecast of local weather, editor’s picks of stories, and sports scores. This is clearly not going to be replacing Reader for anyone, but it’s always pretty nice to get weather updates.
The weather defaults to the local forecast for your location, but you can also set it for a specific place. It also features links to other weather services such as the Weather Channel and the Weather Underground for more detailed information.
Editor’s Picks are limited to the categories of “Technology” and “Business” with more on the way, according to Google News product manager Anand Paka. It’s easy to click over to different news sources for more picks, but it’s a far cry from something like an RSS reader.
Right now, the sports scores are limited to U.S. football, basketball, baseball and hockey (more countries and sports are set to arrive in the near future). Google might be rolling out the features over time, but right now I can’t see the sports-scores box — which I don’t actually mind. For more news please visit STR
